The new guidelines for university exams have been released by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The Medical Council of India (MCI) is yet to release new guidelines for medical colleges. The delay in the release of new guidelines has left the medical colleges and their management with uncertainty.
Admission for Bangalore University Correspondence Course Extended
According to Dr. CMS Rawat, principal and dean, VCSG Government Medical College, Uttarakhand, all the internal, external, and other exams have been suspended. The suspension is persisted till any new guidelines are issued by the MCI. Unlike many other courses, next-level promotion cannot be given without reasonable assessment to students of medical colleges. The new guidelines by MCI are expected to be released by mid-August after which the decision will be taken.
Dr. Maha Singh, associate professor, Department of Paediatrics, Shaheed Hasan Khan Mewati Government Medical College, Haryana stated that MCI guidelines will determine the mode and manner of how the exams will be conducted. The institute may even opt for virtual assessment, in case the situation is not favorable for conducting exams at the campus.
Delay In Guidelines Impact Students Of Medical Colleges
Singh claims that the final year students of medical colleges are likely to be affected more by the delay. It will consequently affect their internships, PG admissions, and job offers.
MBBS exams for final year students hold significant importance as they have to appear for an internship after the exam. The completion of their course within the stipulated tenure will be ensured by timely assessments and internships. Students may get deprived of NEET PG and other job opportunities if the extension of the course happens.
Adjustment for the exams of intermediate students of medical colleges can be done during the entire duration of their five-year course.

Promotion on the Basis of Provision in Medical Colleges
Various medical colleges are still waiting for the new MCI guidelines regarding students’ assessment. Whereas several other medical colleges have turned to provisional promotions.
The undergraduate students of AIIMS Patna, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (MAIDS) have been provisionally promoted to the next level without assessment. The exams for these students will be conducted when the situation improves.
Undergraduate students of all batches except the final year have been promoted to the next year, as per the guidelines from our regulatory body Dental Council of India ( DCI). Dr. Sangeeta Talwar, principal, MAIDS proclaimed that the exams for these undergraduate students may be conducted as and when possible.
However, the theory exams for the final year PG students are being presently conducted by MAIDS. As for undergraduate students, online internal assessments have also been conducted.
She further stated that the assessment for the final year PG students is in progress. They are conducting the exams at the campus by assuring all the precautionary measures. Whereas for the final year undergraduate students, the exams will be conducted once the directives are received from the Delhi University with whom they are affiliated.
